Lake sediments act as not only lake's sink but also lake's source of nutritional materials. Phosphorus is usually recognized ,as the critical factor on eutrophication. The phosphorus exchange across the sediment and water associates directly with the physical and chemical characters of sediment itself, but the exterior factors can play a great important role. The exterior and their functions that affect the exchange of phosphorus across the sediment - water interface were summairzed and analyzed based on literatures. The effect of exterior factors including distribution of fractions, phosphorus forms, electron acceptors, and organic material in sediment on phosphorus exchange across the sediment - water interface are discussed respectively.
