The “literature for the masses” debate in the 1930s and 1940s marked an important step in the self-awareness of China's new literature in terms of spirit and style. It reflected the self-renewal and development of May Fourth Literature. The debate stimulated a nationalist awakening in the new literature, and laid the foundations for ius public reception. In the political context of the times, it was heavily utilitarian, which had a positive effect on its connection with social realities but to a certain degree a negative one on the objectivity and depth of the discussion. As a matter of fact, the question of “literature for the masses” is still relevant even in contemporary globalization, and the debate still has lessons for contemporary literary creation: national characteristics should be regarded as the starting point for the development of Chinese literature; close, scientific and effective relations should be built between writers and the public; and writers should have a sense of social responsibility and an idealist spirit.
