摘　　要： 城市蔓延是20世纪困扰西方城市发展的重大问题,但对究竟什么是城市蔓延以及如何测度城市蔓延,西方不同学科的学者有着不同的诠释．本文在系统分析西方学者对城市蔓延界定的基础上,归纳出城市蔓延的一般性概念;指出了西方学者对城市蔓延测度的局限性,并得出西方城市蔓延测度只有在进行比较时才有意义的结论． The ＂Urban sprawl＂ is a big problem that from 1960s western countries have had to deal with. But what is ＂Urban sprawl＂ and how to measure it different scholars of different schools have different points of view. Based on analysing the definition of urban sprawl by western scholars systematically, the author gives a general definition of urban sprawl. The author points out their limitation and applicability.
