Because of the daring depiction of obscenity and evils, Gothic novels have long been condemned for damaging the social morality and violating the ethical principles. However, this essay tries to do an ethical analysis of the struggle between the good and evil, and the conflict between the religious and the worldly ethics in The Monk, one of the most representative Gothic novels in English literature. It reveals that through the exaggerating and penetrating representation of the conflicts between human nature and social morality, Lewis shows his critical opinions on the feudal religious ethics and his devotion to humanity, in which lies the power of Gothic novels to "purify" the readers' souls and "sublimate" their ethical feelings.
