Results of the researches on biomass,net primary production,and growth characteristics of the trees and saplings etc.in the lower subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in China were summaried.Biomass lay in 300~500 t·(hm) -2 ·a -1 for developed forest stands,including leaf biomass 5~15 t·(hm) -2 . Root biomass accounted for c.20% of total biomass,and was obviously related to above-ground biomass.Fine root biomass was found in a range of 1 283~12 02t·(hm) -2 ,and most of the biomass distributed in the upper 20 cm of the soil.Net primay production amounted to 20~30 t·(hm) -2 ·a -1 ,and the utility efficiency of effective radiation to 2 0%~2 5%.Litterfall lay in 5~12 t·(hm) -2 ·a -1 ,and standing crop of litter c.5 t·hm -2 ,Dead tree and tree fall mass were about 3 9~7 1 t·(hm) -2 ·a -1 in the stands studied.Herbivory of leaf lay in 0 2~0 7 t·(hm) -2 ·a -1 ,with heavy herbivory being in rainy season.Annual radial growth of the trees was 0 111~0.518cm,usually 0 2cm,measured with dendrometers,steel tap,and disc analysis,and that of saplings,0.113cm,measured with vernier callipers.Height growth were measured 20~50cm in the trees and 5 132cm in the saplings.
