The global corporate restructuring as represented by the US has become an important tendency in the past 20 years, with its immediate effect being that the international competitiveness of American businesses has ranked the first in the world. In comparison, the big companies of Japan have just started their restructuring only in the recent years under the pressure of foreign and domestic environments. Through comparative studies from such angles as the traditional business systems, long-term low economic growth, fiercer global competition and the crushing business liabilities of Japan, the restructuring of Japanese companies is faced with many challenges. Compared with the actions of American and European companies, the restructuring of Japanese companies is mostly carried out in a passive and sluggish way, and its effect remains to be further judged and evaluated.
