Objective To explore the effect of selenium and(or) iodinedeficiencyontheabilityofspatiallearningand memory of successively bred rats in developing stage. Method The selenium and(or) iodine deficiency rat modelwas established by feeding the selenium and/or iodine deficient food. The rats were divided into 4 groups: controlsupplemented with both selenium and iodine (Se+ I+), selenium deficient group supplemented with iodine only(Se- I+),iodine deficiency group supplemented with selenium only (Se+ I-) and both deficient group supplemented with neitherselenium nor iodine (Se- I- ). The parameters of rats in the Morris water maze were investigated. Result In theorientating navigation test, for the F3 female rats the average latencies in Se- I- group were significantly longer thanthat of control group (P < 0.05); In the spatial probe test there were no significant differences of time staying indifferent quadrants among four groups of both male and female F3 rats. But the female rats of control group spent moretime in target quadrant than the other three groups did. There were no significant differences of the times passingthrough the platform for the male rats of four groups, but the times for the female rats of Se- plus I- group significantlydecreased. There were no significant differences of the parameters in both orientating navigation test and spatial probetest of F1 and F2 rats. Conclusion Selenium and (or) iodine deficiency have no significant effects on the learning andmemory of F1 and F2 rats in developing stage; selenium or iodine deficiency had no significant effect on the spatiallearning and memory of F3 rats. However, a combination of selenium and iodine deficiency demonstrates mostsignificant effects on the spatial learning and memory, especially for the female F3 rats.
