Abstract The biological and antigenic characteristics as well as pathogenicity for chickens of six strains of paramyxovius type 1 (PMV-1) seperated from pigeons were studied and compared with Newcastle disease virus (NDV ).The biological characteristics of piseon PM V - 1 were very similar to that of V V N DV, but the pathogenicity for chicken embryos and chickens was different. Meanwhile, among the strains it was not the same either. Some strains the pathogenicity for chickens was stronger than ever reported. The results of H I test showed that the antisenicity of pigeon PMV -- I was different from that of NDV,but they had a high level cross reaction. It is hard to distinguish them according to the HI results.The Clinical signs were nervous signs consisting of dropping wing, leg paralysis, torticollis,tremer and watery diarrhoea, frequently sreen in colour. The incubation pened and the diseasecourse of PMV - I infected pigeon were longer than N DV infected pigeon.
