The strong and growing presence of mainland Chinese students in the UK and some other countries has not been matched accordingly by the research efforts made on them. In particular, there is a general lack of understanding of the academic experiences as perceived by this learning group. The present study sets out to investigate, from students?perspective, the learning experiences of Chinese students studying in British universities. The research utilized questionnaire and follow-up interview, and involved 53 mainland Chinese students in one UK university. Some outstanding pattern with regard to Chinese students?learning experiences in the UK context emerged from the results based on the obtained data. It was found that the present generation of Chinese students has moved away from the traditionally passive and dependent image depicted of them by most of the existing literature. They have instead become more open-minded, more assertive and more willing to meet challenges than their predecessors. Though some respondents did encounter certain learning difficulties when they were thrown into a different academic environment, the subtle phenomenon found in this age group is that they seem to stand better chance to survive a brand-new academic world once placed in a learner-centred environment. This new Chinese generation, brought up along with China抯 Economic Reforms and Family Planning Policy, has experienced a shift toward individualism. They have outdone their elders both in adaptability and potential.
