摘 要: 汉语成语中的数目词有丰富的文化内涵,英语的对应数目词却难以传递汉语数目词的信息。本文比较成语中数目词与英语数目词在比喻意义上的差异,探讨汉英翻译如何弥补相关的文化空缺,指出由于英语数目词的对应比喻意义缺失,译文只能舍弃原文的优美结构和生动比喻而求得原文基本信息的传递,所以汉英翻译经常不可能使译文保持原文的丰姿。 As figures in Chinese idioms are imbued with rich cultural connotation, their equivalents in English often fail to convey the real meanings that the Chinese figures contain. This paper attempts to compare the semantic differences between figures in Chinese idioms and those in English in a figurative sense and explores how to make up such relevant cultural vacancy in our Chinese-English translation. The author points out that because English figures have no equivalent figurative meanings catering to Chinese figures, our Chinese-English translation of these figures have no choice but to convey the basic messages of the original figures by abandoning the original graceful structures and vivid metaphor. Therefore, Chinese-English translation of figures is often incapable of reproducing the original style in the translated version.
