L1 transfer is an important source of errors in the process of learning a second language. This essay examines the phenomenon of pro drop in the English output by students of Chinese L1. Chinese is a topic prominent language, where it is normal to find sentences with topic subject co reference, or with topic but without subject. In contrast, English is a subject prominent language, where topicalization is not frequent. It is hypothesized that before learners have finally acquired the English subject rules, they may not be sensitive to the pro drop in their output, due to the influence of the Chinese topic structures. The result of an empirical study supports the hypothesis.
