As a classic feminist novel, Jane Eyre ontains the element of both rebellion against conventions and the element of compromise with society. This essay points out that the mad woman in Jane Eyre is another suppressed Jane Eyre in the male-supremacy society, and that the two images of Jane Eyre and the mad woman are a manifestation of the split female consciousness of the author of the novel Charlotte Bronte herself. The essay further reveals the mental conflict in the female writer's mind as well as her dual writing tactics.
