This article, basing itself on economics and law, more fully reveals the essence of tipping. It holds that tipping is the product of a commodity economy. In the hospitality industry, apart from the regular stipulated pay, tips to attendants act as a kind of reward for their enthusiasm, hospitality and prompt service. Tipping has the feature of a specific guild;it is voluntary, depending on value fluctuation and mutual equality. The author thinks that accepting tips falls with in the civil law act category and is of a certain contractual nature. He further points out that it is unreasonable to outlaw tipping in our country at the present time. The author also offers some initial suggestions on problems involved regarding tipping based on the asseration that tipping is legal.
