摘　　要： 中国近现代断断续续实施义务教育大约半个世纪，促使近现代普通教育发生了比较显著的变化。在推行义务教育的那个时代，中国民生困顿，百业凋敝，内忧外患，能取得如此成绩，与中国近现代教育家和知识分子对推行义务教育的设计、出谋献策，使近现代义务教育具备民族性、灵活性和融通性这三大特性有关；使中国近现代义务教育符合中国经济落后、综合国力不强的国情，容易推行。 Abstract The off and on compulsory education system from 1904 to 1949 in China brought about considerable changes to the general education of the same time, during which China faced enormous difficulties of poverty, depression, and foreign interference. The achievement owed much to the contributions of Chinese educationists and intellectuals in their effort to make the compulsory education system flexible and adaptable to the Chinese conditions.
