The core of Bakhtin's carnival theory is represented by the three concepts of carnival. The carnival spirit, such as the populace, the ritual, the equality, and the subversion or degradation, is the highlight of this theory. Apparently, as a cultural mode, the carnivalesque strongly influenced the 20th century popular culture. We can easily find its irresistible vigor and inventiveness in Hollywood movies, popular journals, television, soap operas, rock music and so on. John Fiske, an American theoretician of popular culture creatively uses Bakhtin's carnival theory to explain the pleasure of wrestling on TV, which is actually a carnival of bodies, rule breaking, grotesquerie, degradation and even depoliticization of official ideology.
